hey so why the fuck is princess lexa from the oathbound reality now???

(long post of me just kind of rambling)

so. lexa. right? (and also orin i guess this is about him too but i dont care about him at all sorry) she was the first fully original cel shaded skin (not counting cel shaded optional styles) it was their first real attempt at it so they looked kind of clunky and strange. which is like. understandable yeah sure. she (and orin also) come from some reality in which they are implied to be robots or cyborgs or whatever, specifically referring to someone as their “father.” its also implied lexa escaped wherever she came from and orin was sent to retrieve/rescue her. they were clearly trying to go for some kind of “anime girl thats secretly a sadistic killer robot” thing. and so their home universe is just kind of implied to be a cel shaded anime universe (similarly to other, non-original anime skins)

right. ok. so. WHY IS PRINCESS LEXA????????? NOT CEL SHADED ANYMORE?????? HUH???????????????????

this shit has fr been bothering me since she was revealed. how did that happen. what. AND THEN HER DIALOGUE WITH OTHER CHARACTERS WAS SHOWN AND SHE IS APPARENTLY FROM THE OATHBOUND MEDIEVAL REALITY NOW????????? HUH????????????????? like. i just cant stop thinking about it. and then i started thinking about it more in depth. and now im just wondering. can spending time in a reality that is not your original one (in fortnite canon at least) literally alter your fundamental appearance like that??? like. ok hear me out.

the anime legends pack. is something that released during c3s4. and it involves three random, relatively recognizable fortnite characters... becoming cel shaded

so this is something that already HAD been shown to be possible? an already existing character’s snapshot becoming cel shaded when they were not originally that way. except this also isnt the first time a previously cel shaded anime skin has gotten the ability to become un-cel shaded. the "Wish, Set, Match” quest pack from this same season also had erisa (cel shaded skin from c4s2 who is a cat princess) in a tennis outfit and also with the option to just. NOT be cel shaded. (cant find a good render that is non cel shaded but trust me it exists)

except this also ALSO isnt the first time they did this for a cel shaded anime-implied skin. because thats what they did with the academy champions set

WHICH, HEY, COMPLETELY UNRELATED TANGENT BUT: THE FUCKING ACADEMY?????????? AS IN. THE ACADEMY THAT LENOX ROSE (C3S4) IS LITERALLY STATED TO HAVE “ESCAPED” FROM????????? MULTIPLE TIMES OVER??????? NOT ONLY IN HER VERY OWN BIO BUT ALSO BY MULTIPLE NPC DIALOGUES FROM THE SEASON????? she is literally a character from some kind of television show that was putting her in danger, only referred to as “the academy.” and how she’s “The first to escape The Academy... But not the last.” (direct quote from her description) and then these mfs just come on out as the “academy champions”?????????????? what does that mean????????????? what does it mean to be the champion of this implied danganronpa ass anime show????? how did they escape???? what the fuck?? god i wish they had done literally anything with this

anyways. i dont know what my conclusion is. uh. so yeah i guess snapshots can just kind of Become cel shaded or Not cel shaded anymore. this has a lot of implications and i REALLY WISH THEY’D DO ANYTHING WITH SNAPSHOT LORE BEYOND JONESY!! im not even going to get into how much i’ve been obsessing over cuddle team leader/syd and her countless snapshots and the implications of ragsy or cuddle team master more than possibly being from mega city ANYWAYS I’M GETTING OFF TRACK! i need more people to talk about this kind of stuff with </3

idk where im gonna put all my headcanons in the long run but look. ok Titanfall and thus Apex are in the nebulous far future, but with the drawbacks of technology having to be generally very practical due to (I assume) the wars, the comparatively sudden large-scale exploration into deep space, and so on. CW: surgery, dysphoria, trans health What im trying to say is trans healthcare has come a really long way, probably. I think that despite this, its kind of function over form even though the form aspect is beyond what we might expect today. Things like minimization/avoiding of scarring are important and possible to an extent we see only rarely now, but i think only prioritized in high visibility areas or if its the primary concern of the patient. Instead, the focus is keeping or improving functionality and lining up the form with the patient’s vision on an individual level, and as such results and expectations are pretty highly variable! tl;dr while I drew trans mirage with top surgery scars for me, pretty much, I do have a few hcs on how mirage being trans would pan out in canon context (i have been percolating for a WHILE so this is long):

1) Always Knew he pretty much looks like a cis dude. He went on puberty blockers/similar early (thanks to supportive mother and brothers) and has a pretty much fully functional bottom situation, & what little scar care there was, it was easier when he was younger and had the time and space and spent more time staying at home fiddling with tech, so there isnt much that “gives it away” per se. As an nb/trans guy i really like this one because like. personally, the idea of just. a reasonable amount of effort to pretty much align my brain and body seems appealing! but probably the only way this one gets drawn by me is finishing a trans gibraltar/trans mirage comic idea i had where they were both like “i have something to tell you before we-- WAIT HOLD ON YOU TOO???” because it would actually involve the things that would make this different from just drawing mirage cis lmao,,, All said its not exactly unrealistic for mirage to just be running around like “IM TRANS AND LOVE MY KINGS QUEENS AND EVERYTHING OTHER AND INBETWEENS IN THE TRANS COMMUNITY ✊🏽😤 RESPECT AND GRATITUDE LEGENDS ONLY!!!!!” rather than being stealth LOL 2) The Classic transitioned a little later but has still been on T for like a decade+. Did have to have non-minor top surgery, but this would have been not apparent if he could sit still, wait the appropriate time after surgery, and practice proper care but he absolutely could not for the life of him LMAO he fidgeted, took off anything uncomfortable a little earlier than he should have, and started working out and running around doing errands too quick. In his defense, I’d imagine this was when he and his mother were realizing they might be alone for longer than they’d hoped (and also during a tumultuous wartime period where Mirage may have also been trying to keep fit in case of being drafted or wanting to follow his brothers) but not sure how that would line up timeline wise. This would be the one I drew! I like to think that while sometimes he regrets not taking better care of them, for the most part, the scars are a point of pride. 3) The Homebody absolutely no surgery, partially out of feeling he didn’t need it, but also out of discomfort and questioning. Still on hormones though, and slowly coming around to at least considering surgery instead of putting it out of his mind or dismissing it. I have also drawn this Mirage but its nsfw lmao so i cant... show it... here at least. This is also Big Projection candidate #1. im valid though ok AAAANYWAY I always have like infinite sometimes clashing hcs for this stuff so to me none of these are more valid than another and ofc however you personally envision trans mirage and also trans care in the titanfall/apex universe is equally valid, i just. this is the only place i can say this stuff out loud LMAO so!! fwiw the other trans hcs i have are for Gibraltar, Lifeline, and Octane but also everyone is trans i dont make the rules 🤷🏽

tbqh, i hate lalura. I dont want it to become canon. Because everytime theres a kids show focused on a group if teenagers, the two most “normal” seem to “fall in love get married have babies” ect. Now im not saying lance and allura are normal, and they are very 3 dimensional as characters. tbh i love them individually, and so it sucks even worse that i know, deep down as a writer, that they have really, really good chemistry. The people they were at the beggining of the series never would have actually wound up together, and their chemistry is slow to form as they slowly change as people. Its kinda great. but the problem is this show could have still had a relationship like that, AND had main character repressentation.

I ship Klance not because it has great chemistry, but because in the first 3 seasons, they had incredible potential to build chemistry. Enemies to friends, Friends to buddies in combat, buddies to lovers as not-straight teenagers. Klance as a potential hasnt been in the series at all since season 4 or 5 to be quite honest, and im kinda scared thats on purpose because of the amount of the fandom that was interpreting it as gay whether the studio meant it to be or not. But the fact is, having these two boys build chemistry and at least try to date (even if it doesnt work out!) would have been really, really nice. Lance and allura are the two most normal, because allura is a girl who, while being a fighter, wears pink (even if thats basically gothic for an altean), is highly compassionate (dont get me wrong, i love that about her, its an incredible balance to a lot of the harsh decisions and hot tempers on the show), and trusted, and fell in love with the enemy, then had her hesrt broken. Lance is normal mostly in his outward persona. he’s actually charming, because cheesy pickup lines are funny as shit, (and everyone knows it, so i can honestly say i dont know many girls who dont take (INNOCENT) cheesy pickup lines as a compliment, like, “someone saw me, thought i was pretty, wanted to make me smile, and obviously this single line isnt gonna make me fall head of over heels, so its all in good fun”), he’s apparently conventionally attractive, is a good fighter, and isnt really as dumb as he seems.

They are two clear hero and heroine archetypes, thats what i mean by normal. now thats not to say that they arent very good characters, they are and i love them, but, why is it that the two most “normal” are the only ones who ever find love? Again, dont get me wrong, i have loved pretty much every single character on this show, even coran, the comedic relief there to make kids laugh, has an actually incredible storyline and is a fully fleshed out character. But lets face it, for as incredible as every character is —pidge is a gender non-conforming (dresses like a dude and dont give a sht), geek girl who us incredible with computers, building tech, and anything that has to do with computer science engineering for that matter, is good at fighting, fights smatter not harder. Hunk is a boy who is friendly and cares deeply for other people, even if he hasn’t known them that long. he is very scared a lot of the time, but also incredibly brave. he’s physically large, and loves cooking just for fun, or to make himself or others feel better. He’s not a typical “man chef”, he loves cooking the same way my 76 y/o itallian grandmother loves cooking, because it is simply enjoyable, and can make people feel good. Keith is mixed-species and has a very, very short temper. Yes he’s matured, gets frustrated slower and has more patients with good people and can make less rash decisions, but that doesnt change those facts. Shiro is disabled (some of the time) and apparently gay, though its only heavily implied for about 39 seconds screen time MAX and then never discussed again. You know how often these types of characters get hapoy endings? never. keiths character dies sacrificing himself for others, or becomes addicted to somethjng. pidge will be “happy on her own”, and be alone, any romantically happy ending for hunk would be shown in the last two minutes of the series with him being soft and dopey in love. Shiro’s character type would focus heavily on their own self-rediscovery plot, and their happy ending for the story is that they’re happy with themselves and their circumstances finally. If its not happy its because his character type is dead by the end of it.

Thats always how it seems to be.

But lance and allura? they’ll find esch other, their happy ending is front and center for everyone.

So, great writing, absolutely incredible writing if im being honest, but how about changing things up?

from the get-go, build keith and lance’s cjaracters and keep building their chemistry, one day their banter becomes less severe, and theres mlre smiles. Give me a teenage gay couple that isnt perfect, and who have their fears and their doubts but understand that each if them has similar thoughts snd fears.

From the get go give me shiro who is fighting for his own self identity after galra inprisonment , give me allura trying to figure out wjo she is and what to do now that ten thousand ((TEN THOUSAND?!)) years has passed for her in the blink of an eye. me me tje two of them growing closer through a shared understanding of each others troubles, gove shiro still have all of his personal plot points, but have allura by his side. ((keeep adam even, make him bi!))

or even just, give pidge an innocent and cute romantic subplot, make lance actually bi, just do something, anything, that doesnt make it seem like you’re saying only specific, neurotypical, normal, straight, and conventionally attractive characters get to find love. like come on, you had to kill adam? wtf. of all the shows to kill the gay, this was one? thats absolutely ridiculous.

Tl;dr? Lalurra is an incredibly well written and fully fleshed out romantic subplot, that as a writer, i admire and respect; but it’s bullshit because of where the show was headed sessons 1&2, what it could have been, and what it took a sharp turn away from. It could’ve been so much more without sacrificing ANY individual development, and they chose not too. They took a step away from the lgbt community, and from any chance of breaking current societal norms, and tried to make uo for it by calling pink goth and having a character we JUST met say something that really best friends can say with no problem that we’re ment to interpret as gay. I lvoed season 7, but this is why im mad.

I heard some spout out how Lance and Allura’s romance is bad because it pushes the stereotype that if you flirt with a girl enough, they will fall in love with you. But I don’t think that’s really the case. Instead Allurance reminds me a lot of James and Lily from the Harry Potter series.

In the series, James was a clever, charming person, who’s fun to be around. Despite that, James didn’t give off a good first impression. He was arrogant, even Snape said it was like criticism bounced off of him. He would often hex other students for the hell of it, including Snape. Like Lotor, Snape wasn’t an innocent snowflake and was friends with a group of people, who later went on become Death Eaters. A lot of these traits came about through his pampered upbringing. Lily was turned off by these traits, seeing him only as arrogant and obnoxious. The fact that James pinned and chased after Lily didn’t help things either. 

Over time, her views of James changed when he became a better person and showed his true self. James stopped picking on others and was always there for his friends, wanting to help others and fight for the greater good. It was only then that Lily started dating him and fell in love with him.

The relationship between Allura and Lance seems in a similar vain to me. While Lance wasn’t a bully like James, he was very cocksure, arrogant, insecure and flirted with every alien girl he thought was attractive. His first interaction with Allura was him flirting with her. He also had a one sided rivalry with Keith, because of his inferiority complex.

This is okay. Because Lance grew out of these traits and became a better person.

For one, Lance legitimately completely got over his playboy phase, and acknowledging that his feelings for Allura were so much deeper and real. He never made a move on Romelle once. The Lance from s1 would’ve made a move on Romelle by now. 

Right after Lotor betrays the team, he never makes Allura feel guilty or uses it as some sort of opportunity to make a move on her. He’s focused on making sure she knows none of this is her fault and that he’ll always be there for her.

Lance also doesn’t pick fights with Keith anymore, respecting his leadership and place as second in command.

Lance became a stronger and noble warrior. He even sacrificed himself to save Allura at one point. 

It was only after all Lance changed that Allura returned his feelings. Even now, he never forced himself on Allura and let her come to her own decision. Lance also seems to doubt he is even an romantic option for her. 

So yeah, instead of their love story being one based on Lance pestering her hard enough that Allura fell in love with him, it’s one based on Allura only returning Lance’s feelings once he became a better person. 

(Come to think of it, their romance is like Belle and Adam’s from Beauty and the Beast as well…except Lance never transforms into a monster.)
